Below we have provided a key to the various activities you will be doing throughout this course. We have aimed to give you a variety of on and offline activities that invite you to Experience the map making process, Research other cities and their approaches, Deepen Understanding of how a Child-Friendly City Map will benefit your city, and Create your own guiding documents. Read more below to see what each of these activities includes!

  • Activities that help you experience the spirit of the Child-Friendly City Map. 
  • Through these activities, you will learn about your own relationship with your city, and also experience the outreach activities you will be leading later with youth and community partners.

  • Short readings, videos, examples from GUB, and website explorations. 
  • Through this research, you will learn about the the history and values of the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative and Child-Friendly City Maps. You will also learn about Growing Up Boulder as an organization and how they created their own Child-Friendly City Map.

  • Short quizzes and discussion posts. 
  • Through these activities, you will check your own understanding on the content you researched, and highlight the aspects that we feel will help to guide you the most effectively through your own process of creating a Child-Friendly City Map. 
  • NOTE: These activities are NOT GRADED. The goal is not to TEST your knowledge, but to BUILD your background and understanding to set you up for success.

  • Utilizing templates to generate guiding documents and materials to create your own Child-Friendly City Map in your community. 
  • Through the completion of these templates, you will prepare yourself to lead your community in creating a Child-Friendly City Map. These templates are based off of the actual materials that GUB used to create their Child-Friendly City Map in Boulder, CO. 
  • NOTE: We have scaffolded these activities so that if you complete them as you go through the course, they will guide you in the process of creating a Child-Friendly City Map in real time. However, if you feel more comfortable completing the templates and the entire course before embarking on your map-making process, that option is available to you. Simply save the materials until you are ready to begin!
