Purpose
The purpose of this stage is for you to build your understanding of the history and benefits of Child-Friendly Cities (CFC) and a child-friendly city map for your community. During this stage and throughout the course, you will be doing activities meant to build your background knowledge and skills to lead this process with others in your own community. You will create documents, build practices and procedures, and engage with your community in essential steps to make a child-friendly city map.

Through interactive activities, we will guide you in an engaging and immersive experience to become a child-friendly map expert! Below is an overview of the activities, reading and research that you will do during this stage:
Conduct Research

- Use this interactive activity to explore your own city and begin to see how child-friendly (or not!) it is.
- 1.2 |🦉 Child-Friendly Cities Initiative Quiz
- Learn about Child-Friendly City Initiatives and background on the CFCI movement, and test your understanding with a short quiz.
- 1.3 | 📖 Explore CFC maps from around the World!
- See examples of CFC maps from around the world to build your background on how CFC maps can look and be used, and get inspired to create your own.
Begin Drafting Foundational Documents
- 1.4 | 🖐 Identifying the Benefits of a Child-Friendly City Map
- Here you will begin creating your own foundational documents to guide your map making process. You will start by identifying the benefits of a child-friendly city map for your city.
- 1.5 | 👣 Interviewing Community Members
- An important element of creating a CFC map is to listen to and engage with diverse community members. Here you will generate community-authored ideas of the benefits the CFC map will bring to your city.
- 1.6 🖐🏻| Drafting Your City’s CFC Map Abstract
- Here you will draft an abstract that defines the map’s purpose and goals for the community. This will serve as a unifying message for the map moving forward.
- 1.7 | 🖐🏿 Drafting Your City’s CFC Map Mission Statement
- Here you will draft a Mission Statement for your CFC map. This will guide your work as you collaboratively create your CFC map with partners and youth.
- 1.8 |🖐🏽 Drafting Your City’s CFC Map Parameters
- Here you will begin to identify the parameters for your map to assist designers in collecting base layers.
Identify Map Partners
- 1.9 | 🖐🏼 Asset Mapping to Identify Potential Map Partners
- Here you will begin to identify partners within your community who can help you to design, celebrate and distribute the CFC Map alongside a diverse group of youth in your community.
Identify Map Designers
- 1.10 | 🖐🏽 Identify Potential Map Designers
- Here you will begin to identify potential designers in your community who can help to make this CFC Map a reality.
Consider Map Funding Pathways
- 1.11 | 🖐🏾 Funding Considerations
- Here you will explore an example budget from when GUB made our CFC Map and begin to identify expected expenses and potential revenue streams for your CFC Map.
