Principle 1: Start with Equity

An equity matrix is simply a table which holds the names of your partner organizations, the young people who are part of a program within that organization, the ages of those youth and any other noteworthy demographics. Clearly, it won’t be possible to include all the youth you might want in your map project, so it’s very important to think about partners that can help facilitate the greatest inclusion. We recommend that you make a special commitment to include young people who are less likely to be heard, due to immigration or housing status, ethnicity, income, gender identity, sexual orientation, language, disabilities, etc. Making an equity matrix that reflects diversity in multiple ways is a critical step in creating a map which will reflect a broad range of perspectives and ideas from youth across all demographics. GUB matrices include at least 50% young people who come from underrepresented communities.

Now that you’ve watched the video for Principle 1, you are ready to think about building your own equity matrix. We have provided an example matrix for you below.

1. Go to the Growing Up Boulder Originals folder on Google Drive.
2. Once you have, open the document entitled CFC Equity Matrix Example. 
3. Explore this example to see potential ways to consider diversity and representation in your CFC map creation.  
4. Once you have explored this example, you can begin to generate your own CFC Map Equity Matrix.

2. Once you have, open the document entitled CFC Map Equity Matrix. 
3. Use this template or your own to begin to fill out your CFC Map Equity Matrix.
