Overview of Stage ②

Purpose: 

The purpose of Stage 2 is threefold: capacity building, collaborating and collecting map data. First, you will build upon what you’ve learned so far about Child-Friendly Cities and your child-friendly city map by learning more about Participatory Planning and GUB’s 6 Principles of Youth Engagement. Second, you will begin collaborating with your community partners and your map designer/s. In an important meeting with partners, you will model for partners how to engage with their young people and collect data for the map! We will give you step-by-step instructions for leading this meeting. By the end of this stage, you and your map designer/s will have the data needed to begin drafting your child-friendly map. 


During this stage you will: 

In sections 2.1-2.17, you will engage in research about participatory planning, build your understanding of key engagement principles and lead an important partner meeting. Below is an overview of the activities and map moves you will make! In section 2.18, we offer the opportunity to have a mid-course meeting with one of our staff, to answer any questions you might have a talk through any course needs you might have.. 

Research Participatory Planning

    • Here you will begin reading about Participatory Planning as an approach to designing communities which invites the participation of the people most affected by that planning–in our case, children, youth and their caregivers.

Prepare for Partner Meeting 1

  • 2.9 | 📖 Review Slide Deck and Agenda
    • Here you will review key materials for facilitating Partner Meeting 1.  All attending community partners at Partner Meeting 1 will join you in having their youth groups participate in the map making process.
  • 2.10 | 📖 Review Equity Matrix
    • We review the importance and steps for creating an Equity Matrix here since you will be creating one with attending partners during Partner Meeting 1.
  • 2.11 | 👣 Complete Activities 1 and 2
    • Here you will complete the two activities so you are ready to lead them during Partner  Meeting 1.
  • 2.12 | 📖 Review Lesson Plan 1
    • Reviewing Lesson Plan 1 will help you prepare for teaching your attending partners how to work with their youth groups in Partner Meeting 1 . Feel free to personalize the lesson plan according to your own wants and needs.
  • 2.13 | 🖐🏼 Create Caregiver Survey
    • Here you will review and make edits to the Caregiver Survey that you’ll give to attending partners in Partner Meeting 1.
  • 2.14 | 🖐🏿 Prepare to Collect Partner Data
    • You will be introducing your partners to three sets of data during Partner Meeting 1. After Partner Meeting 1, they will each lead Lesson Plan 1 with their youth, and then share the data back to you. This section helps you prepare for receiving the data from partners.
